Welcome Week

Welcome Week

Welcome Week is a three-day welcome back to campus event for new and returning students. Student Leadership's goal is to reduce the first day of school stress as much as possible by stationing college staff and student leaders around campus to answer questions, provide directions, and offer a new students a warm introduction to Seattle Central.

For returning students, staff, and faculty who need a morning energy boost, we also hand out free coffee, popcorn, and breakfast bars.

What to Expect as a Volunteer

You don't need to have encyclopedic knowledge of where things are on campus - our priority for Welcome Week is to offer students a sense of belonging and care at Seattle Central. Even if you spend your whole volunteer shift walking students to Information Central because you can't answer a single question, chatting with students and connecting with them on the way makes a huge difference in their college journeys.

 As a Volunteer You Will:

  • Check in before your shift at the coffee station, under the stairs next to Information Central (BE1105)
    • Please remember to wear your Welcome Week shirt if you already have one (or any other branded Seattle Central shirts). If you don't have one, we will have a limited number available for volunteers.
    • We may have snacks to pass out to students (and to use as a conversation starter).
  • Head to your station
    • You can float around the area you signed up to be in, or stay in one place near a heavily-trafficked area - we trust your judgement.
  • Greet students passing by and offer help
    • "Good morning! Anyone need help finding anything?"
    • "Hello, welcome to Seattle Central!"
  • Walk student to where they're going, whether it's a classroom or a service
    • Unless there is a large rush of students that other volunteers at your station can't handle, we prefer to always provide a warm handoff for the student to make sure they feel supported in using on-campus services. Warm handoffs make a huge difference!
    • Make sure you also ask if the student prefers the stairs or elevator.
  • If you can't answer a student's question, it's ok! In this case, you can:
    • Check the FAQ below.
    • Walk the student to Information Central (BE1105)
    • Write down the question and email it to caboffice@seattlecolleges.edu, so we can find the answer and put it in the FAQ for next time

Have you tried checking Canvas? Is the class self-guided or an independent course?

No, student ID cards are not required at Central (although they are high recommended - you'll need an ID to get into all buildings except the main Broadway Edison entrance). You get an ID buy first paying $10 at the Cashier's window in the enrollment lobby, then taking your receipt across the lobby to the ID Center, where you will have your picture taken and card printed.

Note: If the student is in Seattle Promise, they should not have to pay for the ID. They can go directly to the ID Center, and tell the attendant that they're in Seattle Promise, which waves the cost of an ID for students.
